CITY OF ANGELS
by Malcom Dawson
Haiti 2010
It is said that Los Angeles means the city of angels. I have lived there and
wonder sometimes where the name came from. A recent trip to Cap Haitian, Haiti
has truly touched me in a way to believe that there are many cities of angels.
Encountering a people that have nothing and then experiencing a devastating
earthquake in their country leaves them with even less if that is possible.
Supplies that normally come from the south have been slowed down if not halted.
Families that had families at PAP are devastated due to losses. Other families
are opening their small homes and welcoming family members to lodge with them
even though they struggle to survive with their own. Orphanages gain new
children. Churches do all they can to help their members and neighbors.
A small but effective group of volunteers show up to offer what seems like a
meager hand. Distributing as much food as time allowed to small churches to
distribute to their community. Visiting several orphanages and leaving supplies
and monies. Serving 200 meals at the government hospital. Helping out at the
gymnasium to register earthquake. Examining 52 preachers eyes and giving monies
to help them continue spreading the Good News. Sharing heartache with Tabitha
and others over the soon loss of life due to disease and illnesses.
And through all the hopelessness and despair there were still smiles and
encouraging signs. The excitement in many faces as they received a small bag of
rice and a small bag of beans. Kids (including Kevin) jumping rope. Kathy and
the kids blowing bubbles. I saw people who I believe have hope in something
higher than these temporal things.
And I am sure I was in the presence of angels with David, Tim, Julie, Vicki,
Brian, Nolan, Kevin and Kathy. Thank you Lucner and thank you all for some
invaluable memories and faith building experiences. I am very thankful to have
been born in the USA.
