Continued information about the project. FOOD: Each child will receive food for lunch while at school. This alone in some cases is more than they get daily at home. During a normal day a family of 4 may have 4 ounces of rice to eat. Needless to say it is not for consumption at noon. It is saved for that 1 meal a day. If they have beans then the mean can go further. Meat is a luxury. Coal for a fire is a luxury that many do not have. Oil to cook in is scarce. Wood is somewhat scarce since everyone is cutting the trees down for cooking. DRESS: What you see in each pictures is the children in their best state of preparedness. When you see some of the children you will notice they have dresses and nice clothes on. That is the only "dress-up" clothes they own which was donated by various groups. The wear these every Sunday to church or a funeral. You can see in some of the pictures that there is a state of repair needed on some of these clothes but since there is no Wal-Mart, no sewing shop, no means to purchase anything to repair the clothes they will wear them until they can not pin them any more. One little girl had a dress on that only had 1 button left to keep it on her. Clothing will be provided for school since uniforms are desired. EDUCATION: School supplies will be paid for while in school. Education by the government is sometimes provided up to the 6th grade. Most of Haiti can not read or write due to the lack of education. During the educational process, in which the school that Lucner works with, each child will be taught up to the 12th grade and have Christian fundamentals. The current belief in the country is Voodoo. It is very real. Since the education will be provided through a Christian school it is the goal to provide the children with Christian beliefs and get away from Voodoo.
You can read more reports on this website @ Littleton COC Mission Reports Menu You can read the CIA World Fact Book and learn more about Haiti and there problems. There are two types of orphans in Haiti. The first is what we traditionally think of as an orphan--children without parents. The second is a child with a parent or parents but they are unable to provide the basic necessities of life--food, clothing and shelter. In either case, the children end up living any place they can. The few shelters that exist are so overcrowded that if a child finds himself in one of these places, he may still just survive by huddling in the corner, eating any scraps of food provided. Often children sleep and live in refuge dumps since there may be scraps to eat and paper to cover up with at night. Clothing is found by any means possible. Most clothing comes from US charity organizations. Shoes are hard to come by and many just go without. There is no way to provide all that is needed to the children or the ones that are in need. The only thing that can be done is to continually provide what is available and what can be gathered for each mission trip. Slowly a change can come. We have seen the ones that have been provided clothing and food by our trips have been changed. Each year there is an improvement to the locations we have helped and continue to help.
